Boat history

we got it from it's last owner in peterhead who aquired from an outdoor centre type place that was having a clear out but where it has been since it was built noboby knows
Thanks to Amber Sexton( AL 5853 for telling me that the sail number was hidden at the back of the CB under lots of paint

( 5/5/03)"The hull is nice and solid but the fore deck has been very badly replaced the previous have screwed a lot of galvi fittings on it or used rusty screws HO hum "

Work is progressing i now have been given a a deadline to get her back on the water so we can take her to ullswater for a week in june.
the boats been striped of every fitting and rusty screw and iv'e got lots of stuff now arriving to go back on

The Hull

19/05/03
The plan is to remove or clean up all the poor old glass repairs inside the boat , which most ly seem to be attempts to seal to bouancy tank joins!
iv'e started to grind the floor area back to good plastic getting rid of the lumpy csm finish (just don't like it ) getting rid of the loose old repairs
( Remember that GRP does not stick/join to unprepared gelcoat or old glass!) you have to grind it down to get a good key

For a laugh i stuck my digi camera into the tanks

Note the original foam bouancy and the rusty bolts holding the jib track !!!@£$%^yuck


4/06/03 Finished floor area goundout most of the old deckpaint and sand gone at last along with the old doggy glass repairs( word of advice 80grit flapwheels on a grinder are brill lotsa of dust but faster then sanding disks)
The finished cleaned up floor area You can see where iv'e even taken out the original filler that the tanks are sat on alot of it is cracked.(still not bad for 30 year old filler)
Right through to the hull which is absolutly solid i haven't found a delaminated patch yet( theres still time)!

The floor area tanks joins are to be strenghtened with an west expoxy glass tape reinforcement along the whole length each side. I'll seal the existing plastic with a coat of epoxy before i put some new dek paint on.Ive started to drill in to the voids under the lip thats meant to be bonded to the hull i'll inject expoxy in there as well. I'm also going to bond in a few hardwood attchment points for the new systems. ( A big tip is, if you have a window company that makes hardwood windows they should be happy to let you have offcuts it's amazing the nice bits of wood they throw away or chip)

Unfortunatly i prodded the mast step area to find the ply side rotten away and the wooden frame a soggy mess.
Notice the glass lip at the bottom which turned the step into a perfect water tank
once the Frame exposed and the rotten wood gound out I decided to leave the rest of the frame alone to dry then just to repair and epoxy fill the damage and fit new sides (made of proper marine ply)
26/03/06 look on page 2 for the finished mast step

On the weight question i think iv'e taken off about 3kgs of fittings, wood and rotten glass repairs and the hull has dryed out lots, so far iv'e used 2kg of epoxy repairs and ply so i should break even here.

Not going to bother with the Hull paint removal and the antifoul!!! on the outside over the winter i'll take her back to the original dark green gelcoat
The CB and rudder will have to wait aswell. Unless any one has an spare one that they don't need??

The Rigging.
5/5/03The mast i have is not an albacore one mast it is a holt allen procyon which doesnt relate to anything iv'e seen about albacores ( Bummer)

Thanks to www.starboard org who are now the makers of holt spars for the info on the spar.
the spar is short by about 20cm to make it the class rules. So iv'e asked starboard for a length of profile which i'll sleeve on to the bottom then move the fittings to the correct places.This should last for a while, i hope

7/06/03 the mast having it's extra length sleeved on

final fit not bad considering the damage 25cm more
and then lots of riverts and drilling. It will be interesting to see how this fix lasts over the next year

The boat had no systems for the mainsheet, kicker, jib tension or even realistic shroud tension, most of my birthday presents look like barton blocks and shiny stuff.
Who said hobbies are cheap!!!
luckly i have sailed with a few people over the years who have sheds/garages of lost bits from boats past thanks everyone for letting me rumble about.
and thanks go to to Joe taylor who runs Ropeloft through ebay i've now got enough dyneema for the halyards and d12 for the purchases and iv'e dug out my splicing stuff,

my main priorities are to get the shrouds madeup to thier new lenghts.
get the mast to class measurements re black bands and the forestay attachment
move the gooseneck

jib cascade
kicker purchase
split main sheet

any info you my have to help me sort it out will be gratefully received
